I saw this posted FB OppositeTalk.
Took me a few seconds to get it, but then again it’s another thing I’ve never driven, a column shifter or an auto.

Fun fact: With the exception of the occasional uhaul-van, I haven’t driven a column shift since 2005, and I still sometimes reach for a stalk when I want to shift. Learning to drive on one really got it wedged in my head (or maybe column shifters are just awesome and all automatics should have them?)

ever driven a column-shifted manual (three on the tree?)

Nope. That has always felt like a poor idea to me, though obviously I can’t claim that from personal experience.

My college airport had a column shift 3 speed manual Dodge truck. That took some getting used to.

I can. they get so sloppy you pretty much have to shift them like you’re in the Fast and the Furious movies. Not because they have lots of gears, but because you’ve got to wiggle the damn shifter around so much just to find the three gears it has.

Coincidentally, every car/truck I have owned has had the wiper stalk on the left side of the steering wheel. WHERE IT BELONGS

I used to drive an old pickup with the column shifter on one side and the turn signal lever (with no extra controls on it) on the other and nothing else right by the wheel . One day I got in a car that had the newer obsession with tons of controls on stalks and grabbed one of them to try to shift. It did not produce the desired result.
I still prefer a column shifter over the center-mounted one. But today I think it’s more about wanting to reclaim that space for a larger center console . For the same reason, I prefer a pedal parking brake over a lever in the center (though I totally get why people in RHD regions hate those) .

Fiance’s car is a Pilot and they have column shifters. It always takes me a second to figure out how to use the lights and wipers.

The last E-class I drove also had a column shifter as did my first car. They’re easily the most luxurious gear selector for an automatic.

But then the turn signal stalk is on the same side ? Two stalks? I can’t even handle switching from 90’s Honda to GM wiper controls

all automatics should be column/non-center console shiftered imo . Even DCT. If there’s no manual to slap around why not have an extra friend up front? Far more uses for that space other than an unnecessary shifter

One stalk. Also known as a multi-function switch . W iper functions controlled via twisting , while signals remain lever-actuated.
